Research Interests

My research interests encompass twentieth-century warfare, military transportation and procurement, and more generally, the material culture of modern conflict.

Major Research Projects

Chariots of Mars: Mechanization, Transportation, and Logistics in Canada’s Overseas Forces, 1914-19
I am working under contract with the University of Toronto Press on Chariots of Mars, a study of military transportation during the First World War, with emphasis on the new roles played by motor vehicles in the forward area. There are also chapters on procurement, driver training, automobile culture in the overseas forces, narrow gauge railway and specialist vehicles such as ambulances. The research phase for this manuscript was largely completed during a postdoctoral fellowship at the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa, between 2007 and 2010.
