Applying to the Public History MA Program

Admission to the Public History program is administered through the History department's graduate program, and with the same requirements as a "regular" M.A.: normally, a four year Honours BA with a concentration in History (or a general three year BA plus a supplemental year) and a minimum B+ average in the last two years of undergraduate courses. Competitive applicants will have at least one fourth year course in history.

Unlike the regular M.A., the Public History program is capped at a maximum of twelve students per year.

There are three differences in applying to Public History compared to the regular stream. Your application's Statement of Purpose should explain what leads you to Public History, what you hope to get out of the degree, and your career aspirations. Many of our successful applicants have had prior public history experience in museums, libraries, archives or national parks, or completed coursework in public history. Please tell us about such experience in the online application. You may also opt to send us by regular mail a third letter of reference from a Public History employer; please note, however, you must provide two letters from academic references.

If you wish to visit the program, talk to faculty, and meet current students, please contact Prof. Michelle Hamilton, Director, at mhamilt3@uwo.ca to make an appointment.
