HIS 2301E: The United States: Colonial Period to the Present

This general survey of American history from 1600 to the present consists of two lectures each week and a tutorial hour with an instructor. The emphasis will be on the most important trends and developments in the history of the United States. A detailed list of lecture topics and reading assignments for each week follows below. History 234E places heavy emphasis on assigned readings from documents and several monographs and interpretive studies. You should also read the appropriate section of the textbook prior to attending lectures and beginning the required readings for the week.

  • Ronald Takaki, Double Victory: A Multicultural History of America in World War II. 1st Edition. (Back Bay, July 2001).

Evaluation

The weight assigned to marks when computing the final grades is as follows:

Tutorial work 25%

Mid-year examination 20%

Essays (Two Essays, 15% each) 30%

Final Examination 25%
