Intent to Register

If you plan on returning for the 2011-12 academic year, you need to submit an Intent to Register form online (please see the Social Science Academic Counseling website for exceptions).

Rebecca Dashford, the History Undergraduate Program Advisor, is available for one-on-one advising Mondays 9:00-11:30am and 1:00-4:00pm, Tuesdays – Thursdays 9:00-11:30am and 1:00-3:30pm and Friday 9:00-11:30 and 1:00-4:00pm.

You should also plan to attend the Ready for Intent to Register Fairs. This year the History Department will be participating in the Social Science Showcase, on Wednesday, March 2nd, 12:00 to 3:00pm, in the main lobby on the second floor of the Social Science Centre. Departmental representatives will be on hand to answer you questions regarding our courses, modules and programs.

Ball State Conference

Each year, the Department of History sends students to Ball State University to participate in an undergraduate history conference. History students are invited to share research and writing with interested students and faculty in an informal setting. Every History subject is welcome. Prizes will be awarded for the best undergraduate submissions. [MORE]

The Dalton Camp Award

The 2011 winner will receive a $5,000 prize for excellence in essay-writing on the link between democracy and the media in Canada. New for 2011, up to four finalists will receive a $1,000 prize. The deadline for entries is March 15, 2011.[MORE]

Severin Flikerski Prize in Military History

Awarded annually to the undergraduate student in the Department of History who submits the best essay in military history. Preference will be given for topics in European military history. Students will be asked to submit a graded copy of an essay written in the last twelve months (3000 words minimum) to the History Department by April 10th. A committee within the Department of History will select the student recipient. This prize was established by Professor Maya Shatzmiller in memory of her late husband, Mr. Severin Flikerski. Value: 1 @ $150

NACBS Undergraduate Essay Prize

The North American Conference on British Studies awards ten prizes of $100 each to the best essays on British topics from undergraduates studying in Canadian Universities or colleges.

The guidelines for the contest are as follows:

1.The essay must have been written while the author was enrolled as an undergraduate at a Canadian college or university.

2.The professor who taught the course needs to include a letter nominating the essay, including information about the level of the course and the student's year of study as well as the student's permanent mailing address and email contact information.

3.Essays in any field of British Studies are welcome and they will be judged according to the level of the course and the student's year of study.

4.Essays should be no longer than 25 pages, excluding citations and references. Most theses are too long to be considered.

5.Please submit a copy of the essay and a letter of nomination to EACH of the 3 members of the adjudication committee by 15 May 2010 (3 copies in total).

Swankie Award Winner

Congratulations to Lauren Pelley, the 2009-2010 recipient of the David H. Swankie Jr. award.  Lauren is currently completing the Honours Specialization in International Relations, a joint program between the History and Political Science departments.  She is also a senior editor of The Gazette.  She will be going on to the M.A. program in Journalism at Western in the fall.  She received her award from Dean Jerry White, Dean Joan Finegan, and Professor Francine McKenzie of the History department.    Swankie Award Winner 2010

 

Two Western Undergraduate Students Win Essay Prize!

Congratulations to Katie Starr and Matt Gayford who were each awarded undergraduate history essay prizes from The North American Conference on British Studies.  Katie’s paper was called: "Vignettes of Violence: Perspectives on Daily Violence in the Lives of Early Modern Englishmen and Women, 1485-1714."  Matt’s paper was called: "Medieval and Modern: The “New Monarchy” and Political Reform in Fifteenth Century England".  These papers were written for Professor Barbara Murison’s seminar on Tudor and Stuart History.
