125th Anniversary Alumni Award in History Awarded biennially to a student in an Honors Specialization, Specialization, or Major in History based on academic achievement (minimum 75% average) and financial need.  Applications can be accessed online through the Office of the Registrar's Web site and must be submitted by September 30.  The recipient will be selected by the Faculty of Social Science once financial need is determined by the Office of the Registrar.  This award was established through Foundation Western.  This award is offered through the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) program, and recipients must meet Ontario residency. $450 biennial

 

The Baldwin Family Scholarships  Awarded to two students entering the second year of Honors History (or those in combined programs) who have achieved minimal "A" averages at the end of their first year, and who will not be recipients of any other scholarship of $1,000 or above. These scholarships were established through Foundation Western by Mr. B.I. and Lorna Baldwin, and Mr. W.C.P. and Lucille Baldwin. 2 at $575 each

 

Department of History OSOSTF Award  Awarded to a student in an Honors Bachelor History with either an Honors Specialization, Major or Specialization in History based on academic achievement (minimum 75% average) and financial need.  Applications can be accessed online through the Office of the Registrar's Web site and must be submitted by September 30.  Recipients will be selected by the Faculty of Social Science once financial need has been determined by the Office of the Registrar.  This award was established through Foundation Western by William Edgar to recognize the outstanding teaching provided to him by Professor Craig Simpson.  This award is offered through the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) program and recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements. $775

W. Donald R. Eldon Scholarship. Awarded to an undergraduate student in any year beyond year one of a program in Social Science based on academic achievement (minimum 80% average). Primary preference will be given to students in History and secondary preference will be given to students in Economics. The Faculty of Social Science will select the recipient. This scholarship was established by a generous gift from Dr. W. Donald R. Eldon (BA '48). This scholarship is valued at $1,500

 

Severin Flikerski Prize in Military History Awarded annually to the undergraduate student in the Department of History who submits the best essay in military history. Preference will be given for topics in European military history. Students will be asked to submit a graded copy of an essay written in the last twelve months (3000 words minimum) to the History Department by April 10th. A committee within the Department of History will select the student recipient. This prize was established by Professor Maya Shatzmiller in memory of her late husband, Mr. Severin Flikerski. $150

 

The Robert A.D. Ford Award. Awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student in History or Political Science, who has a primary interest in Canadian foreign policy or international affairs. Award to alternate between undergraduate and graduate students. Established through Foundation Western by Dr. Robert A.D. Ford, C.C., a distinguished Canadian diplomat. $800

 

Godsoe Family Continuing Scholarships  Awarded to three undergraduate students in Year 2 of an Honors program in Economics or History who demonstrate financial need and have a minimum academic average of 80%. The scholarships will continue as long as recipients remain in an Honors Economics or History program, demonstrate financial need, and maintain an 80% average in a full-time course load. Established by a generous donation from the Godsoe family.

 

Edwin A. Goodman Award in History  Awarded to a student enrolled in second, third, or fourth year who is studying British and/or Canadian history and who has demonstrated financial need.  Established through the generosity of The Honorable Edwin A. Goodman. $500

 

Stephen Kaganov Award  Awarded to a student enrolled in the Jewish Studies program (constituent University only) who has demonstrated financial need.  Preference will be given to a student with a Jewish Studies' major, minor, or taking any course within the program.  The Online Financial Assistance Application can be accessed through the Office of the Registrar's Web site and must be submitted by October 31.  The recipient will be selected by the Scholarship and Awards Committee in the Department of History after the Registrar's Office assesses financial need.  This award was established through the generosity of Mr. Stephen B. Kaganov, BSc '75, through Foundation Western.  Mr. Kaganov's gift is eligible for inclusion in the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) program.  Under the OTSS program, the Province of Ontario may provide a dollar for dollar match over time for endowed gifts directed to student bursaries or financial need based awards and scholarships.  Fulfillment and timing of the provincial match are not guaranteed by the University and/or Foundation Western.  Recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements.  If the OTSS match is realized, the number and/or value of the award will be increased accordingly.  $850

 

The Jacob Family International Study Award Awarded to an undergraduate student in any year of any program wishing to study abroad for a minimum of
one semester, based on demonstrated financial need and academic achievement (minimum 80% average). Preference will be given to a student studying at an accredited university in Israel, and to a student attending
a full-year course over a one-semester course. Application forms and details regarding the application process can be obtained from the Office of the
Registrar. The deadline date for submissions is April 30. The award recipient will be announced in May of each year, but receipt of the award is dependent on an approved Letter of Permission and acceptance into anaccredited university for study abroad. This award was established by Mr. Ellis Jacob. $5,000

 

The Richard Markell Scholarship Awarded to a student registered in an Honors Specialization, Major, or Specialization in History on the basis of academic achievement (minimum 80% average) and demonstrated financial need.  The Office of the Registrar will complete an assessment of financial need and the Faculty of Social Science will select the recipients.  Applications are available through the Office of the Registrar and must be submitted by September 30.  Established by Marguerite Ruth Dow, Professor Emerita, the University of Western Ontario, in memory of her loyalist ancestor, Richard Markell (c.1746-1804), the great grandfather of her paternal grandmother, Alice Markell Dow. $500

 

The Joseph Henry Marshall Prize Awarded for the highest standing in a senior survey course in Canadian History. Open only to Canadian students. Bequeathed to the University by Mrs. Amy Marshall as a memorial to her late husband, Joseph Henry Marshall, MP, to commemorate his interest in all phases of Canadian History. $175

 

The John McEachern Scholarship Awarded to the student in an Honors Bachelor degree with the highest standing in third year of a double Major in English Language and Literature and History, tenable in fourth year.  Established in memory of Dr. Thomas E. Carr, BA '35. $700

 

Hazel Marie Phillips Memorial Scholarship in History  Awarded to a full-time second year student enrolled in the Faculty of Social Science who is registered in an Honors Specialization , Major, or Specialization in History on the basis of academic achievement (minimum 80% average) and demonstrated financial need.  Other things being equal, preference will be given to a woman who meets the criteria.  This is a continuing scholarship.  If a student does not qualify for the scholarship for any reason, the scholarship will be given to another student in the same year, and it will be considered a continuing scholarship with all the requirements as outlined herein.  Applications are available through the Office of the Registrar and must be submitted by September 30.  This scholarship was made possible by a generous donation from Mrs. Jean Walker HBA Arts '38) and family in memory of Hazel Marie Phillips, a life-long resident of London.  Established through Foundation Western. $600 (continuing for three years)

 

The Grant and Peggy Reuber Merit Scholarship One award will be made every other year to a fourth-year student who is pursuing an Honors Specialization in History or a double Major in History combined with Economics, Political Science,  Mathematics, or Statistics.  Biennially, a second award will be made to a fourth-year student who is pursuing an Honors Specialization in Economics or a double Major in Economics combined with History, Political Science, Mathematics, or Statistics.  Candidates must have achieved a minimum  'A' average in the third year of their honors degree program and have demonstrated financial need.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of their potential as scholars and their promise for distinguished achievement after graduation as reflected by demonstrated leadership and other personal qualities.  These scholarships are awarded to two fourth-year full-time honors students with an average of at least 80% in third year. Recipients are selected on the basis of their potential as scholars and their promise for distinguished achievement after graduation, as reflected by demonstrated leadership and other personal qualities. $5,000

 

Gary Segal Family Award in Jewish Studies  Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student in any year of the Jewish Studies program (constituent University only) based on academic achievement and financial need.  The online Financial Assistance Ap0plication can be accessed through the Office of the Registrar's Web site and must be submitted by September 30.  The recipient will be selected by the Scholarship and Awards Committee in the Department of History after the Registrar's Office assesses financial need.  This award was established through the generosity of Mr. Gary S. Pioneer Jamie Smibert Award Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student in an Honors Bachelor degree with either an Honors Specialization in History or a double Major including History.  The candidate must be enrolled in at least one Canadian History course and have achieved an overall academic average of at least 80%.  Candidates must also demonstrate financial need.  Application forms are available through the Office of the Registrar and must be submitted by September 30.  Selection of the recipient will be made by the Office of the Registrar.  This award was established through Foundation Western  by H. Marie Smibert (HBA '40). $2000

 

David H. Swankie Jr. Award in History. Awarded annually to a student in one of the final two years of either an Honors History program, a Combined Honors History program (including Honors History) or a Diploma in Honors Standing in History Program. Candidates must have achieved grades in the top third of their program and a grade of at least 80% in one course in United States History. Candidates must also be of good character and demonstrate this by their involvement in extracurricular activities and show promise for distinguished achievement after graduation. Any candidate is eligible to receive this award only once and must not be a current recipient of any other awards or scholarships at the time of selection. Applications can be obtained from the Faculty of Social Science or the Department of History and must be submitted, along with a short essay, by October 14, 2011. The Faculty of Social Science, in consultation with the Department of History, will select the recipient of this major award. The winner of the award will be notified in January 2011. This award was established to honour the memory of UWO alumnus David H. Swankie Jr. (BA 1977, Economics and Certificate of Honors Standing 1978, History and MBA 1980) through Foundation Western. $2,950
