Program Information
The Department of History at Western offers a variety of graduate programs. Our Ph.D. program trains select graduate students to be professional historians—world-class researchers, teachers, and scholars. Our MA program in History is a one or two year program that emphasizes the deep study of history and the development of research, writing, and analytical skills. Our MA Public History field is either 12 or 16 months that merges classroom theory, graduate level research, and hands-on practice to explore the public side of history in museums, archives, historical sites, and more. For the regulations associated with these programs, see History’s Graduate Program Handbook.
We also participate in several innovative collaborative and interdisciplinary programs: graduate degree programs in Environment and Sustainability, Migration and Ethnic Relations, and Transitional Justice.
