History Programs' Visit to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum!

Students at the warplane museumTwenty-five students from Western’s undergraduate history and public history programs travelled to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton for a full day of history fun! Accompanied by Professors Jonathan Vance and Mike Dove, the group took part in the ‘Wartime Canada’ Experiential Learning program. Students received lessons in the working experience of aircraft personnel and took part in activities focused on sheet metal and airfoil construction of military aircraft, the plotting and planning of aircraft movements on map tables, and the creation and decryption of secret codes. Several students also participated in the museum’s Fly Zone historical aircraft flight simulator VR experience.

While touring various aircraft and participating in the various activities and workshops, students also took advantage of this excellent opportunity to network with curators and museum guides, learning invaluable information about museum management, curation, and interpretation. This trip was helped made possible with generous funding from the Betty Bartlett Public History Experiential Learning Fund for Local History and the Faculty of Social Science Student Donation Fund. Thank you for a wonderful day out!
