In terms of its graphic attributes this image should appear as strikingly different from most of the others represented here. 'New Year's Day' originates in the northern nianhua centre of Yangliuqing, which is known for its detailed and finely crafter pictures. Whereas most nianhua are produced almost entirely by printing, with this image only the outline has been printed while the colours have been added by hand. This allows for a great deal more shading and a wider range of colours.
