Monkey, Peach and Peony
'Monkey, Peach and Peony'
Yangjiabu, Shandong
54 x 34 cm
modern reprint of early 20th century image
With its image of monkey and peach, this image would have been associated with the Monkey King legend, but every part of this picture may also be read as representing more abstract values. 'Monkey' rhymes with 'marquis' (i.e. elite status), while peach is a symbol of longevity. The peony has many meanings, but when grouped with a peach would send the message 'Long life, riches and a good reputation'.
