Chinese society was often divided into the four classes of 'Scholars, Farmers, Artisans and Merchants', but it was also common to represent the ideal society as consisting of those who farmed, studied, fished and collected firewood. These occupations were seen as mutually compatible and able to provide the basic needs of the society. The idyllic mountains, trees and waters in this picture lend further serenity to the harmonious coexistence of people.
