The zhuangyuan was the highest possible title in the imperial examination system, and the winners of that title would be escorted home with great ceremony. Riding on horseback and escorted by umbrella bearers and musicians these zhuangyuan approach an archway (pailou or paifang) that has been erected in their honour. At the top, floating on a cloud, is Kuixing, servant of the God of Literature, and patron of the scholar.
