Although the Stove God calendars were banned during the first three or four decades of communism, people still needed calendars to organize their time, and they still wanted colourful pictures to give it meaning. This picture, therefore, accentuates the calendar with the image of a happy family celebrating the New Year. What attributes can you point out in this image that reflect changes in Chinese society as it moved into the 1980s? Compare this to the earlier Stove God images. What similarities do you see?
