During the Warring States period (7th century BC) the Duke of Jin decided not to leave his kingdom to his legitimate heirs, but rather to the son of his concubine. In order to ensure that this succession would not be contested the Duke ordered the execution of his own sons. Zhong Er learned of this plot and fled the country, but was forced to spend many years wandering the land before he regaining the throne of Jin.
