Workshop Topic

We are at a turning point in global affairs. The Western liberal-democratic order which has shaped international relations since the 1940s is under assault from within and without. Critiques of Western normative traditions and historical practices highlight important conversations but are also ‘weaponized’ by authoritarian power contenders such as Russia China, and members of BRICS against Western principles of territorial integrity, human rights, and democracy. With the current breakdown of transatlantic and North American solidarity, the West as normative project appears brittle beyond repair. This workshop explores the historical origins, iterations, intersections, and dynamics of anti-Western narratives to better understand the driving forces and extent of the current tectonic shifts and their transformative effects on ‘world-making’ and global orders.
