One of the key episodes of the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms was the Battle of Red Cliffs in which the warlord Cao Cao was defeated by the coalition of Liu Bei and Sun Quan. Knowing that Cao Cao would retreat along the Huarong trail Liu Bei’s sworn brother Guan Yu is sent to intercept Cao, but because of an earlier debt of gratitude Guan Yu let Cao Cao slip away.
