在这些最初被设计贴在家门口成对的年画中 ,一位年轻的母亲提着花篮,抱着一条大鱼。“鱼”,在汉语中发音为"yu",它与"连年有余"中的“余”谐音,象征着“年复一年有盈余”。 花也有象征意义:莲花代表生育力,花儿代表美丽、荣誉和财富。

Liannian youyu – Surplus Year after Year Yangjiabu, Shandong  In these paired images, originally designed to be affixed to a double doorway within the home, a young mother carrying a flower basket accompanies her son holding a large fish. The fish, pronounced yu in Mandarin, is linked to the written phrase liannian youyu, which means “surplus year after year”.  The flowers also are symbolic, with the lotus representing fertility and the peony standing for beauty, honor and wealth
